In 1996, The Millionaire Next Door was published, a seminal book for its time. It was written by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko. The book describes how ordinary, middle-class people became millionaires, and they did so without being Donald Trump, Steve Jobs, or Gordon Gekko from the movie "Wall Street." They weren't millionaire movie stars, rock stars, or professional athletes. They became middle-class millionaires by having a good education, living in a modest home in an upscale neighborhood, driving affordable cars, saving money, and investing regularly in the stock market.
Many of them were "net worth millionaires," who became wealthy as a result of the appreciation of their homes and retirement portfolios. They became middle-class millionaires through inflation, being part of the surging American economy. They were living the American Dream.
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, marked the beginning of the new millennium and the end of the American dream.
