On November 15, 1992, guerrillas storm Mariquita, a remote Colombian mountain village, forcing its men to join their ranks. Anyone who resists or refuses is immediately killed. Only widows and spinsters remain, along with the village priest and a white boy disguised as a girl. The village descends into chaos, its streets filled with dirt, and its women suffer from food shortages. Rosalba, Patino's widow and wife of a former police sergeant, envisions a new future for this village of widows. After appointing herself as the village judge, she promises to enact new laws, impose order, and restore the shattered economy—and sets out to create a utopian village that surpasses any ideal society any revolutionary could have imagined.
