Although the novel is set in a time and place far removed from Germany in 1922, it is imbued with the sensibility of Hermann Hesse, bringing together different philosophies—Eastern religions, Jungian paradigms, and Western individualism—in a unique portrait of life as revealed through one man's search for meaning. The novel tells the story of Siddhartha Gautama, a wealthy Indian Brahmin who abandoned a life of luxury and comfort in search of spiritual contentment and insight. On his journey, Siddhartha encounters wandering ascetics, Buddhist monks, and wealthy merchants, as well as a prostitute named Kamala and a humble boatman who has attained enlightenment. Siddhartha finds true understanding as he moves among these people, experiencing life's crucial stages—love, work, friendship, and parenthood.
