Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across nearly every genre, from his iconic role as the villainous Hans Gruber in Die Hard to his influential run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His aura of dignity, resonant voice, and penetrating wit that he brought to every role still captivate new audiences today.

But Rickman's brilliance was not limited to his performances alone. Rickman's writing describes the extraordinary and the ordinary in a manner that is anecdotal, irreverent, witty, chatty, and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes at films and plays ranging from Sense and Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name is Rachel Corrie, and many more. The memoirs span from 1993 until his death in 2016, offering insight into both his public and private life. Here is Rickman the accomplished professional actor, but also the friend, traveler, admirer, director, and enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life lived to the full, all detailed in his characteristically intimate and direct prose. Reading the memoirs is like listening to Rickman speak to a close friend. Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman's early memoirs, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting career first began.
