A revealing guide to how technology is changing the world, from the creator of Exponential View.

We are entering the exponential era.

Over the past decade, Azim Azhar—writer, technology expert, and creator of Exponential View—has become our leading thinker on how technology is transforming business, politics, and society. Now, Azhar offers a comprehensive way of thinking about the impacts of new technologies. Azhar argues that our society is suffering from an “exponential gap”—the gap between the accelerating pace of technological change and our institutions’ struggle to keep up.

Exponential reveals how this exponential gap can explain the most pressing problems of our time. The gap between traditional businesses and fast-growing digital platforms. The inability of nation states to cope with new forms of cyberwarfare. The polarization between tech-savvy urban elites and the rest of the population. And the sclerotic response of liberal democracies to accelerating social problems. But the exponential gap is not inevitable. Drawing on fields as diverse as economics, political science, and psychology, Azhar outlines how to harness the power of technology to serve our real needs—by fostering new forms of politics, innovative business models, and new approaches to national defense. Big technology can become a force for good. This book explains how.
