Maqamat al-Hariri
Author's name: Abu al-Qasim al-Hariri
Al-Hariri’s Maqamat are literary maqamat written by Muhammad al-Hariri al-Basri (446 AH/1054 AD - 6 Rajab 516 AH/11 September 1122 AD). They are among the most famous maqamat belonging to an art of Arabic writing invented by Badi’ al-Zaman al-Hamadhani. It is a type of short story full of dramatic action, in which the dialogue takes place between two people, and its author adheres to the literary craft that depends on rhyme and rhetoric.
The Maqamat of al-Hariri, in their entirety, revolve around extorting money through trickery, as recounted by al-Harith ibn Hammam through the adventures of their protagonist, Abu Zayd al-Saruji. Their language is robust and polished, though not entirely free of artifice, and they were used for a long time in schools.
