The author of this book is Ja`far ibn Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Siraj, whose kunya was Abu Muhammad, and whose title was al-Qari`. He was born in Baghdad and died on the 21st of Safar.
He was a prominent figure of his time, and among his remarkable works is the book "The Lovers' Downfall." He narrated many stories, and many learned from him. He also composed fine poetry, which he included in this book, "The Lovers' Downfall." In it, he followed the style of the ancients in their themes and meanings, and he described the dwellings of the Arabs. His practice of attributing each story to several narrators and informants demonstrates the breadth of his knowledge and his care in ensuring his readers' confidence in the accuracy of what he related. He compiled in his book stories about all kinds of lovers who were brought down by love. We might find in it today things that the mind cannot accept, such as the story of the raven, which was "from its middle to its top a man, and from its middle to its bottom the image of the raven, a tail and a man," and the eloquent verses this little raven recited, describing itself: "I am the raven, Abu Ajwa..."
And like the stories of the wrestler of the jinn lovers, and the mountain telephone
He indicated, through two verses he recited, the place where the two lovers who had been lost had died.
Their traces vanished, and other incidents of sudden death followed by a gasp.
The lover, or the lover's sigh. His stories are a mixture of pre-Islamic, Islamic, and Umayyad influences.
And Abbasi, and all of them, are honorable, characterized by chastity, fear of God, and dread of the punishment of the Hereafter. Even that
The one who contains something of a spirit of moral laxity ends in repentance to God
And His forgiveness, may His glory be exalted.
Religious spirit and mystical inclination permeate many of the stories, as they do the accounts of the martyrdom of those who loved God Almighty, their miracles, and the fates of those who yearned for Paradise, among others. The poetry transmitted is entirely pure, with the exception of four verses, one of which contains a description similar to that of al-Nabigha regarding al-Mutajarrida. This book was originally copied in twenty-two parts, each prefaced by its author with a love poem of his own composition.
