The Book of Maqamat is considered the most famous work of Badi’ al-Zaman al-Hamadhani, who is credited with laying the foundations of this art and opening its door wide for many writers who came after him to enter.
The Maqamat are a collection of short stories of varying lengths, blending prose and poetry. Their protagonist is a fictional character named Abu al-Fath al-Iskandari, known for his cunning, adventures, eloquence, poetic talent, and resourcefulness in escaping difficult situations. He is also a lively and humorous figure who brings smiles to faces and laughter to the heart. The adventures of this intriguing and admirable character are narrated by another fictional character named Isa ibn Hisham.
This author has a great credit for the widespread fame of Badi’ al-Zaman al-Hamadhani, because of the vast amount of information it contains that benefits all readers of different backgrounds and purposes. He wrote it for the purpose of teaching him, so it contains many styles of expression, beautiful words, and prosody. He wanted to get closer to Prince Khalaf bin Ahmad, so he included in it praise that is especially evident in the Hamdani Maqama and the Khamri Maqama. He varied and colored it, using the easy style, the delicate words, and the short rhymes without the slightest effort or cost.
