In the middle of the night, Alfred and his wife, Lina, are surprised by someone knocking on their door. It's a strange man and a woman shivering from the cold, and they ask for a night's stay after their car breaks down. Between fear and pity, Alfred gives in and helps them and gives them shelter, lest they freeze to death. Their lives change dramatically after that, as Alfred and his wife are accused of committing several robberies and are sent to prison.
