Bernardo Kosinski is best known for his 2011 novel K: A Research Report. His work revolves around the “black hole” of memory during the Brazilian dictatorship (1964–1985), and his literary output thus constitutes a coherent literary project that confronts the politics of forgetting and memory assassination, which find fertile ground in Brazil.
His latest work, which you now have in your hands, is disconcerting in several ways. For starters, the novel features only victims of disappearance as a result of state terrorism, a practice widely used in Latin American dictatorships in the twentieth century. But Kosinski presents this in the context of colonialism, that is, since the founding of Brazil.
In this novel-manifesto, Kosinski reconstructs the country's history from the perspective of the practices of domination and physical elimination, or what is known as necropolitics. The novel clearly aims to challenge us to reawaken the memory of resistance to fascism, and it is undoubtedly inspired by Juan Rulfo's well-known novel, Pedro Páramo, offering a kind of self-critical reflection. As is his custom, Kosinski blends historical and contemporary figures in this work, allowing us to imagine and redraw a clear picture of the era of dictatorship in Brazil. In this sense, the politics of disappearance should be viewed as a synthesis of Latin American fascism, and Kosinski's "phenomenology of political disappearance" leaves no room for doubt.
