Among the most important versified texts in Arabic grammar and syntax is Ibn Malik's "Alfiyya," which exceeds a thousand verses. Scholars have received it with great acceptance, memorizing and explaining it, resulting in 127 commentaries. The most important of these is the commentary by the scholar Ibn Aqil, which is also the most widely circulated. He explained the verses, resolved their ambiguities by providing examples, and cited poetic and prose evidence. He also presented the various schools of grammar, including the Kufan and Basran schools, and weighed the different opinions among them. All of this was done with a balance between brevity and detail. The footnotes contain explanations of the poetic evidence and its grammatical analysis. The book concludes with general scholarly indexes.
