This novel appears to be nothing more than an autobiographical and human account of the American poet Sylvia Plath, a dark reflection of the changes in her nature and her relationship with life and people as a result of her neurosis. Plath changed the names and some of the events to protect the feelings of her relatives. The novel was published during her lifetime under a pseudonym and was republished after her death.

Plath's main concern was writing, and Esther's inability to choose a single path to achieve her goal while under the sway of these attacks seemed to be a major reason for her visits to doctors and psychiatric hospitals. Sometimes she wanted to learn German, other times she wanted to make ceramics, other times she wanted to complete her university studies, etc.
As Esther says, thoughts crowd her head and she jumps around like a family of rabbits.
But this family was paralyzed, Esther did nothing, she just stood there, full of confusion.
One of the striking things in this novel is the issue of chastity, which Plath's mother used to advise her daughter to keep for her husband. She even used to send her articles reminding her about the subject, so when Esther fell in love with Buddy, she believed that the subject of chastity would be available in return with her chosen man. Therefore, she was shocked when Buddy simply confessed to her that his life was not without relationships. Therefore, the image of the handsome, ideal medical student was transformed into a hypocritical person, and his name was associated throughout the pages of the novel with this characteristic. Here, Plath appeared at the height of her innocence and spontaneity when she imagined that the matter would be mutual between two lovers.
