Carl and Anna consider themselves veterans of Africa, having spent three years teaching in Uganda during the brutal authoritarian rule of Idi Amin Dada. In this semi-autobiographical novel set in the 1970s, the two take a teaching job in Nigeria, promising adventure, high pay, affordable assistance, and the magic of African life. Were they brave or foolhardy? Perhaps a combination of both. Before leaving, Carl received a letter from an old friend warning him, "Remember, Nigeria is not Uganda," which he chose to withhold from Anna, who was pregnant with their first child. Living in a remote area of central Nigeria, in a house without electricity or running water, they need the resilience to navigate their difficulties as they face culture shock, mismanagement, chaos, indifference, violence, and bribery, punctuated by moments of humor, happiness, and joy.
About the author
Ken Melber is an artist and writer. He has worked in education throughout his life, eventually becoming a prep school headmaster in the UK. Teaching has taken him to Uganda, Malawi, Nigeria, and the USA, providing him with valuable and unforgettable adventures. He and his wife now live in Yorkshire.
