Gregor Ulyas is a simple employee at a beverage company. All his youthful ambitions and dreams of an exciting and cultured life are buried in a modest job and an ordinary married life. But everything changes when he begins receiving phone calls from Gil, a traveling salesman living in the countryside. Gregor transforms himself into Augusto Varoni, a charismatic engineer, polyglot bohemian poet, and great traveler. Gregor is completely immersed in his lies until Gil suddenly announces that he has decided to visit him, and Gregor panics because he can no longer retreat from the image he has created for himself. At this point, these two autumnal teenagers enter into a highly dangerous game, setting in motion the events of this delightful and different novel. Upon its publication in Spain, *Games of Old Age* won the Critics' Prize in 1989 and the National Literary Prize in 1990.
