On a rainy winter day in 1985, Amina and Farid left their home in the Baydoun neighborhood of Beirut for the nearby Ain al-Rummaneh district, heading to visit Barjis, the skilled tape recorder expert. Only Barjis could save that old tape, the last thing they had left of their mountain home after the displacement. Had Amina known the strange events that would soon occur to her and her husband in the al-Musaleh building, she would certainly have refrained from embarking on this journey. And had Farid not been so determined to preserve the voices of relatives and neighbors who had been lost in the fever of killing and massacres, he would not have endured the terrifying darkness of the stairwell. A pitch-black darkness that erases the faces of today, and through it, the spectres of those who disappeared years ago are revealed—alive or dead, human or demonic.
