She hardened her pale white face as she saw the stone lady extend the stone torch towards her and emerge from the fog covering the sea. She heard a voice say, “This is the Statue of Liberty, and there, beyond the strange fog, do you see the buildings, the skyscrapers? This is New York City, look at the tall houses!”
Martha Haddad, a poor, beautiful young woman, travels from Mount Lebanon to New York in 1913 in search of her husband.
Many years later, we see her in Pasadena, California, wealthy and surrounded by sons, daughters, and grandchildren.
Through characters and stories, the novel takes us to America, to the "Arab Front," and to Siberia.
The Great War, then the forgotten flu pandemic, then good golden years, then the global economic crisis (1929), then more good years, then World War II
Martha lives through it all, and so do the readers.
