Reason and emotion

Author's name: Jane Austen

Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen's debut novel, is undoubtedly one of the greatest English novels of the nineteenth century. Born in 1775, Austen paints in Sense and Sensibility a realistic portrait of the men and women of her society, taking into account their character, social status, personal ambitions, and feelings, offering the reader a concentrated dose of pleasure and emotion that makes this novel one of the masterpieces of world literature.

After the death of Mr. Dashwood, his wife and three daughters are forced to abandon their luxurious lifestyle and migrate to the countryside. The two eldest daughters play the lead roles: the rational Elinor and the romantic Marianne, and the novel follows their emotional lives.

Through the central theme of marriage, Jane Austen sheds light on a range of existential issues, such as the position of women in society, social hypocrisy within the aristocracy, the English environment at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the importance of lineage and money in these societies, as well as the status of love: an eternal question that remains relevant to this day.
