Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali, also known as Dhalim ibn 'Amr ibn Sufyan, was one of the most prominent figures in language and literature during early Islam. He was born in the late pre-Islamic period and lived until the beginning of the Umayyad dynasty. He is credited with establishing the foundations of grammar upon the orders of Ali ibn Abi Talib, to reform the Arabic language after the conversion of non-Arabs to Islam.
Renowned for his intelligence and eloquence, he was a poet and orator, and held administrative and judicial positions in Basra. He is said to have been the first to dot letters and add different diacritical marks to facilitate reading and control of meanings.
He was a Shiite of Ali ibn Abi Talib and participated in the Battles of Siffin and the Camel. Abu al-Aswad is considered a pioneer of Arabic grammar, and his contribution to preserving the Arabic language from errors and distortions is significant.
The Diwan of Abu Al-Aswad Al-Dawli is a collection of poems by Abu Al-Aswad Al-Dawli, a well-known ancient Arab poet. His collection features classical Arabic poetry that addresses themes such as pride, love, and wisdom.
