Abu al-Atahiya's Diwan is considered one of the most prominent literary collections in Islamic Arabic literature. This collection embodies Abbasid poetry, characterized by contemplation and imagery, combining the joy of life with pictures of beauty and grace. Readers and researchers can enjoy reading this collection and inhaling its distinctive atmosphere, which alternates between joy and melancholy. Abu al-Atahiya is Ismail ibn al-Qasim ibn Suwayd ibn Kaysan, and was an Abbasid poet, known by the nickname Abu Ishaq. He was famous by the nickname "Abu al-Atahiya," which is said to have come as a result of a comment made by Caliph al-Mahdi on his personality due to his effeminate and pedantic behavior. It is noteworthy that Abu al-Atahiya associated with the caliphs in his youth and carried the zamelah of the effeminate, and he was inclined toward femininity and tenderness. He was known among the people for his beauty and good manners, and he would walk around Kufa carrying jars of vegetables. However, his poetic spirit prompted him to devote himself to poetry and abandon this profession, gaining widespread fame in the fields of poetry and literature. Abu al-Atahiya is considered one of the most prominent poets of his time, and his collection of poems is considered a valuable literary legacy in the Arab heritage.
