Ubaid ibn al-Abrash ibn Hantum ibn Amir ibn Malik ibn Zuhair ibn Malik ibn al-Harith ibn Saad ibn Tha’laba ibn Dudan ibn Asad, and it was said Ubaid ibn Auf ibn Jashm al-Asadi from the Banu Asad tribe of al-Khandafiyah al-Mudariyyah. The time of his birth is unknown. He is a pre-Islamic poet from the authors of the Mu’allaqat and is considered one of the first-class poets. Al-Mundhir ibn Ma’ as-Sama’ killed him when he visited him on a day of misery. He was a contemporary of Imru’ al-Qais and had debates and discussions with him. He is one of the clever and wise poets of the pre-Islamic era, and one of the authors of the Mujamharat, which are considered to be in the second class of the Mu’allaqat. However, Muhammad ibn Salam placed him in the fourth class and said about him: “Ubaid ibn al-Abrash is of ancient memory and great fame, and his poetry is disturbed, lost. I only know what he said in his poem: Deserted from its people, Melhoub, and I do not know what comes after that.”
