Imru' al-Qays ibn Hujr ibn al-Harith al-Kindi, from the Banu Akil al-Murar clan of the Kinda tribe, mentioned in Yemeni records as ruling a kingdom that flourished for centuries, from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD, in the village of al-Faw, considered the first capital of the Kinda kingdom, one of the ancient Arab kingdoms in Najd. He was born in Najd and became famous by his nickname, though genealogists differ on his given name. His father was the king of Asad and Ghatafan, and his mother was the sister of the poet al-Muhalhil, from whom he learned poetry. Later, the Banu Asad rebelled against his father and killed him, and he avenged his father's death, composing much poetry about it. The Persian government was displeased with the Banu Akil al-Murar and instructed al-Mundhir, the king of Iraq, to summon Imru' al-Qays. Al-Mundhir sought him out, but Imru' al-Qays fled and sought refuge with al-Samaw'al, who granted him protection. Imru' al-Qays then decided to seek the aid of the Romans against the Persians and traveled to the Roman Emperor Justinian in Constantinople. Justinian made promises but delayed, then appointed him governor of Palestine. Imru' al-Qays set out for the governorship, but his death overtook him in Ankara. Some of the poetry attributed to him has been collected in a small anthology.
