The collection of poems, “Luzum ma la Yalazm; Al-Luzumiyat,” which contains eleven thousand verses, was dictated and compiled by Al-Ma’arri during the last part of his life, when he decided, after several attempts to integrate into life and society, that this could not be his business. He decided to become an ascetic and deprive himself of all worldly pleasures and delights, his inner voice saying: “And I found the soul of the free man turning his palm / yellow and forcing him to do what is not necessary.”
