Diwan of Abu Nawas

Author's name: Abu Nawas

Abu Nuwas (Al-Hasan ibn Hani Al-Hakami) is one of the most famous poets of the early Abbasid era. This poet lived during a period when our nation was at a crossroads; either to follow the Persian way of life, or to preserve its Arab existence. He wrote on various poetic topics, most notably wine poems, which dominated all the other topics of his poetry. This was a reason why people attacked him, so he was accused of heresy and chauvinism. He also wrote praise, satire, reproaches, and love poetry in both male and female genders. His poetry was mixed with the poetry of others due to its large number. Hence, his collection of poems that we have in our hands. It is narrated by Abu Bakr Al-Suli, who denied the falsehood and plagiarism that Abu Nuwas suffered from. This is the best witness to this unique poet. His poetry is characterized by a delicate sense, delicate expression, and simple words. Abu Nuwas rebelled against the ready-made molds of the nation's life, and charted a path for himself that defined the features of his personality. He is one of the poets about whom much has been written.
