Dubai's historic gates and decorations

The craft of making doors, wooden parts, and their decorative elements in traditional Dubai architecture—as a form of tangible heritage art—occurred a special significance and played a prominent and vital role in adapting buildings to external conditions. The people of Dubai were able to adapt this craft with creativity and thought that evoke admiration and contemplation. It is an ancient art that performed essential functions in adapting buildings to external conditions and climates, meeting the needs of residents to a reasonable extent, and embodying aesthetic artistic meanings and foundations stemming from sincere expression and the fruitful interaction of humans with their land and environment, with all its components. This book sheds light on the wooden doors, parts, and pieces in traditional Dubai architecture, representing a creative achievement and a great cultural legacy. It was developed by generations of craftsmen who took it upon themselves to advance this craft in line with various environmental, social, and religious circumstances. The author relied on this group of craftsmen to build this study. Through documented interviews, he learned from them the history and origins of the carpentry craft, the types of wood used in carpentry, their characteristics, and their sources, as well as the traditional methods used in making various types of doors and windows. The researcher also studied the symbols and wooden engravings on these pieces, their sources and local names given to them by the craftsmen, the engraving techniques they used, and the parts the craftsmen carved.
