What's striking about *Far from the Earth* is that this time the story is told by its main character. The narrator is the young protagonist who gave up his life in the big city and his medical degree to continue his life in the small, deteriorating town of Goiás, located in the Araguaia River region. His decision stemmed from his feeling of need to experience another geography, other types of people, and to look at the world from a completely different angle. He gets closer to the suburban residents to take a closer look at the so-called Carajá Indians, the indigenous inhabitants of the region, their way of life, their culture, and their relationship with nature. In this new reality, he seeks to understand the river that governs and controls everything around him. He also became involved in helping and interacting with the local population, finding himself in situations—even in dangers—that he had never anticipated. However, these situations, in turn, brought maturity to his personality and a gradual change in his values. In this book, José Mauro recalls the experience he and the Villas Boa brothers had during their exploratory trips in the remote regions of Araguaia.
