This is what the novel's heroes found themselves in; they were trapped in a fantasy-like quagmire that they could neither escape nor confront, given the scarcity of possible solutions. Despite all of this, the ending is happy, as everyone realizes that things did not go as they had expected. They finally realize that sound planning and caution without causing panic remains the best option, thanks to scientific and cognitive progress that saved the world when it was counting its final days on this universe, and everything in it had become worthless, and it is possible that humanity, and perhaps life itself, would disappear. However, hope sometimes sprouts from the womb of the impossible, creating a new world ready to face challenges, adapt to the new reality, and devise solutions for adaptation, reconstruction, and building.
