This book examines the history of One Thousand and One Nights and its influence on prominent Western writers and literary works after its complete publication in the West through translation in the early nineteenth century. It also examines translations of One Thousand and One Nights, particularly into English, and their reliability and closeness to the original text. It also examines the narrative techniques in One Thousand and One Nights and the precedence of these techniques in the literary arena. However, these techniques were not widely discussed in the West, especially during the emergence of the narrative techniques called "metafiction," which Western literary theory considers a product of the 1960s and 1970s. The book provides a comprehensive explanation of the nature of "metafiction," an explanation of its various techniques, and its theorization (its entry into the Western literary theory pipeline). It discusses prominent Western writers who have adopted various applications of "metafiction," and mentions prominent critics who have studied the techniques of "metafiction." The book also reviews the literary career of the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz and its development, discussing his short, intense novel, The Thousand and One Nights. The book represents the basis and foundation for Mahfouz's novel, The Thousand and One Nights. Mahfouz's novel is a modern novel that adopts the "storytelling" techniques of the original book. The book reviews the literary career of the North American writer John Barth and the extent to which it was influenced by the narrative techniques of The Thousand and One Nights, and the character of Scheherazade in particular. The book discusses John Barth's short story collection, Ten Nights and a Night: Eleven Stories, and its connection to the original book and its techniques. The book concludes with a call to expand the scope of (Western) literary theory to include international works such as The Thousand and One Nights, given its tremendous impact on world literature, the uniqueness of its narrative techniques, and its precedence in appearing.
