It is the story of a young German officer during World War II. It takes us through his golden years of naivety and innocence as a child through his firsthand experience with the devastation and atrocities of war. We then follow his life as he grows up as a young man in Nazi Germany and goes to university in the midst of the rise of the Third Reich. We follow him when he first falls in love and when he first picks up a gun. We are captured and taken to a concentration camp, and then escapes. We are also with him when he first meets an American soldier. All of these events and images together form the portrait of Mervyn, a young man searching for himself and finding meaning in a world left in the burning ruins around him. From that ruin, like his country and his world, Mervyn begins to rebuild himself.
