The Journey to Saussure's Science
Linguistics, as the scientific study of language, is considered one of the modern sciences that brought about a prominent intellectual and methodological turning point in the study of linguistic phenomena, in terms of their structure, functions, system, as well as their phonetic, syntactic, and semantic characteristics.
Writing and classification in this field have proliferated, starting with the founder of this science, the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (d. 1913), whose lectures – published by his students in 1916 under the title "Course in General Linguistics" – included the principles of this science, its methodology, objectives, epistemological tools, and fundamental concepts.
