British Campaigns Against the Bani Bu Ali Tribe

The author pauses at a pivotal stage in the history of the Arabian Gulf, from which she examines the history of British policy-making in the Arabian Gulf, the plans implemented, and their outcomes. Al-Khatri addresses this in four chapters: "The Bani Bu Ali Tribe and Its Relationship with the Surrounding Local Powers," "The First British Campaign Against the Bani Bu Ali Tribe in 1820," "The Second British Campaign Against the Bani Bu Ali Tribe in 1821," and "The General Effects of British Repression of the Bani Bu Ali Tribe." She also includes an appendix containing a number of historical documents, maps, letters, and other materials that support her documentation. The author employs a historical-documentary approach in her presentation, proceeding with a narrative that follows chronological order and the sequence of events, bringing to light a number of specific details overlooked in Gulf history. She covers the entire three-year period during which the features of the British presence and role in the region were shaped. Al-Khatri chose her book project due to the absence of research and studies documenting this experience and period in the region's history. In her introduction to the book, she states: "The studies and research that have addressed this topic have only done so in scattered lines or short excerpts. This research aims to fill this gap by presenting the course of the British campaigns against the Bani Bu Ali tribe through an analysis of their causes, events, and their consequences for the region." The author documents this period in detail, writing in the first chapter about the conditions of the Bani Bu Ali tribe in particular. She introduces their homeland, lineage, and their relationship with neighboring local powers, pausing at the geography of Oman and reviewing different historians' opinions on the tribe's lineage. She also examines the relationships between the tribe and the authorities in Saudi Arabia, and the stance of the Omani authorities regarding the tribe's presence in the region. She states: "The Bani Bu Ali tribe is one of the Omani tribes that played a historical role in Oman during the nineteenth century CE..." And "Sources differed in determining the origin of the Bani Bu Ali tribe. The Omani historian Salim bin Hamoud Al-Sa'abi traces their origin to Yemen and considers them a branch of Tayy. In his book (Is'af Al-A'yan fi Ansab Ahl Oman), he states that Bani Tamam 'are the backbone of the Bani Bu Ali tribe, and according to genealogists, they are from Judhaymah Jurm, a branch of Tayy, and are currently led by Al Hamoudah bin Sultan."
