Hajj to Najd

Author's name: Ahmed Abish

The British traveler Lady Anne Blunt was a cultured woman and a bold, honest traveler who contributed to the literature of Western travel to the East with two unique journeys to the Euphrates and northern Arabia. She was one of the first pioneers in a series of female travelers who visited and wrote about our Arab Levant, such as Mary Wortley Montagu, Lady Esther Lucy Stanhope, Isabel Eberhart, Lady Jane Digby, Lady Isabel Burton, Gertrude Bell, Dorothea von Linke (Countess Malminiati), Freya Stark, and the most recent of them in our time, Violet Dixon. After publishing Anne's book, "Bedouin Clans of the Euphrates," we are pleased to complement it with this book about her second and final journey accompanied by her husband, Wilfred. In it, she recounts, in an engaging and enjoyable manner, how they resolved to undertake a more dangerous and more distant journey to Najd, "the cradle of the Arab tribes," after hearing about it from the tribesmen of the Euphrates Peninsula, as the source of their origins and the home of their glory. The idea involved great risk and a wonderful adventure that piqued the interest of the couple. Soon, in the winter of 1878, they promised their "friend," the Palmyrene Bedouin Muhammad al-Abdullah al-Arruq, to lead the caravan from Damascus to the north of the Arabian Peninsula, passing through Hauran, Lajat, Hamad, Wadi al-Sirhan, al-Jawf, and the Nafud Desert, all the way to the city of Hail, the stronghold of Prince Muhammad bin Abdullah Al Rashid. They were the fourth Western traveler to visit Hail at that time, following Palgrave in 1862, Guarmani in 1864, and Doughty in 1877.
