The novel "Biography of the Sultans of Kilwa" recounts, in a wonderfully engaging and meticulously documented style, true events from the lives of the Sultans of Kilwa. His Highness narrates the biography of the Sultans of Kilwa Island, the reason for their migration to Africa, and the events that befell them, including the tribulations and seditions regarding their rule.
The novel, comprising 114 pages, consists of eleven chapters, an appendix containing a lineage of the Sultans of Kilwa, and dozens of Arab and foreign sources and references.
After diligent scientific verification and documentation, His Highness was able to remove and resolve a long-standing ambiguity and unknown fact for decades regarding the history of Kilwa. In his research, he relied on the well-known manuscript "Kitab Al-Salwa fi Tareekh Kilwa" (The Book of Solace in the History of Kilwa) and everything written about it, in addition to the documents and manuscripts he possesses regarding genealogies, ancient Persian history, Portuguese documents, and other references and sources.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah stated in the book's introduction: "It is a true historical narrative that I wrote based on the manuscript of "Kitab Al-Salwa fi Tareekh Kilwa." Literati and historians from the coastal countries, known today as Kenya and Tanzania, knowing of my extensive collection of British and Portuguese manuscripts and documents related to East Africa, asked me to write about the history of their countries. When I resolved to write the history of East Africa, I promptly contacted the British Library in London and acquired a digitized copy of the manuscript known as "Kitab Al-Salwa fi Tareekh Kilwa." I began studying that manuscript, as well as everything written about it by Arab and foreign historians who had failed to interpret its contents, finding it confusing."
His Highness added: "From studying the manuscript "Kitab Al-Salwa fi Tareekh Kilwa," it became clear, firstly: that the author was unknown, but he mentioned his birth date in the manuscript as: Monday, the second of Shawwal, 904 AH. Secondly: the manuscript was old, as evidenced by its copying date by Abdullah bin Musbah Al-Sawafi by order of Sultan Barghash bin Said bin Sultan in 1294 AH, corresponding to 1877 CE, making the manuscript three hundred and fifty years old. Thirdly: the copyist had difficulty reading names of individuals or places, either due to the poor handwriting of the author or the manuscript's deterioration from age and damage. Fourthly: of the ten chapters of the manuscript, three were missing, which I was able to cover using Portuguese documents.
Fifthly: what was written in the manuscript about the arrival of the Sultans of Shiraz to the African coast is a myth, and the truth is found in contemporary manuscripts concerning the departure of the Sultan of Shiraz at that time. With the grace of Allah Almighty and my collection of manuscripts on genealogies, ancient Persian history, and Portuguese documents, I was able to resolve the ambiguities for historians and write the history of Kilwa as a true and documented historical narrative."
