Tolstoy wrote this novel in the last years of his life, during a period when he was suffering from the illness that led to his death. It has even been said that it appears to represent a stance he wanted to take in confronting injustice and discussing the meaning of justice. On the other hand, the novel expresses Tolstoy's critical view of Tsarist Russia's treatment of the people of Dagestan. In this novel, as in War and Peace, it appears that while Tolstoy values heroism and rejects injustice, he also opposes the idea of perishing for glory. Therefore, he depicts a less than glorious end for this archetypal hero. As is the case in most of his works, he presents a picture of Russian history as a whole, filled with wars, conspiracies, betrayals, and suffering. However, the focus of this novel remains the life of that character, Hadji Murad, whom he portrays in an engaging and endearing way, and the harsh lives of the people of the Caucasus and the injustice they face. Despite its small size, the story "Hadji Murad" is considered one of Tolstoy's finest masterpieces and was widely read, even influencing Gandhi's idea of peaceful resistance. The renowned philosopher Wittgenstein, who admired it, said of it: "It possesses the coldness and clarity of a late work."
