Positive psychology cannot be derived from psychological phenomena alone, and if that is impossible, it is even more impossible to derive it from the manifestations of illness alone. This science requires, moreover, a foundation that regulates these phenomena according to its requirements. Adler did not hesitate to acknowledge this need, by recognizing the logic of social relations in the world as an absolute metaphysical truth. Once we acknowledge this principle, we must move on to examine the individual's psychology in terms of his relationship to it. The way in which the individual's inner life is linked to the social being can be identified in three "life directions"—as scientists call them—which are his general responses to society, to work, and to love.
