Kanafani completed writing this play in early 1967. However, "The Hat and the Prophet" was not published until 1973, about nine months after Ghassan Kanafani's martyrdom. It was first published in "Shu'un Filastiniyya" (Palestinian Affairs) magazine in April 1973.
"The Hat and the Prophet" is Kanafani's second play, after "The Door," and here we will notice a formal theatrical obsession based on the game of the dock, which moves to include the accused at one time and the judges at another, and may extend to include the presumed audience of the play.
