There is no doubt that this book sparked such controversy that it became one of the most famous books of the twentieth century. In it, the author argued that "pre-Islamic poetry" was illegitimate and that it was borrowed from the early Islamic era. These new views were a powerful shock to his contemporaries, and their repercussions continue to this day. Penal battles erupted between the doctor and his opponents, both in the pages of newspapers and magazines, and entire books were written to respond to him. The matter went beyond that, and the doctor was referred to the prosecution on charges of atheism and insulting Islam, but he was acquitted. All this was merely for his free opinions on literature written by the "Dean of Arabic Literature." The author followed the "scientific research method" in his dissection of pre-Islamic poetry, adopting Descartes' method of skepticism as the basis for his critique.
