The two Rightly-Guided Caliphs who exhausted those who came after them, as no one after the era of the Prophet reached their level of justice and wisdom: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab. Taha Hussein tells us about them in this book. The author found that the books of those who came before him went to extremes in their chronicling of these two figures and the events of their era, and at other times, to the point of exaggeration and neglect. Some exaggerated in their veneration of them to the point of sanctification, and transmitted unreliable accounts of their time, reducing them to the status of established facts, while others belittled them to the point of denying their achievements or belittling their importance. As for Hussein, he presents, with great objectivity and fairness, aspects of the personalities of Abu Bakr and Umar, extracting from the authentic accounts transmitted from them the approach each of them followed in: governance and politics, raising the banner of Islam, unifying the Muslim community, and repelling the arrows of aggressors and those who seek discord.
