Here, Taha Hussein excelled in depicting several scenes of the painful Egyptian reality of the 1940s, a reality in which poverty, ignorance, and classism were rampant. It was a society that cared for none but the wealthy and disregarded those destined to live a life of suffering. The author brought together these diverse images through their shared suffering, even if the names, places, and events differed. He succeeded in describing his characters completely, as if he lived among them and saw the minutest details of their lives, even exaggerating in his descriptions of their gait, stance, and bow. The Dean of Arabic Literature wanted to send short messages to those who did not feel the suffering of these classes, to provoke them to change their painful reality. The motive behind this immortal literary and social work was the hope that the 1952 revolution in Egypt would create a new society, one in which equality would prevail and justice would triumph.
