Taha Hussein wrote these chapters as if he were speaking to his listeners during one of his radio interviews. They came out as intended, so you can read them as if he were sitting next to you, recounting the poets and great figures of Arabic literature. When he wrote them and sent them to the magazines "Al-Siyasa" and "Al-Jihad," the author didn't intend them to become a book that people would circulate and use as a reference for Arabic literature throughout its pre-Islamic, Islamic, and modern eras. But it did become that way, perhaps against his wishes. These studies are among the most honest and comprehensive critical studies to address this aspect of Arabic literature, discussing the artistic side of a number of the greatest poets, examining their poems with explanation and rhetorical and verbal analysis. A large portion of the study is also devoted to the issue of ancient and modern poets. The musky conclusion concludes with the dean of Arabic literature reviewing correspondence that took place between him and a number of writers of his time on various literary and critical issues.
