These are two complementary memoirs: an autobiography of the author, and a biography of the writer himself. At the same time, it is an artistic novel based on imagination, allusion, suspense, digression, and a focus on rhetoric and eloquence. This makes Taha Hussein one of the pioneers of modern Arabic literature. This memoir also condemns a generation of Arab intellectuals who traveled to Europe in search of knowledge and to pursue their higher education. They were dazzled by Western civilization, but instead of benefiting from science, knowledge, and literature, they fell into temptation, vice, and the temptation of sin. They immersed themselves in the crucible of evil and corruption, blindly following the West and believing in its purely materialistic philosophy and decadent ideas. It is the tragedy of a writer who devoted his life to literature.
