In this book, the dean of Arabic literature presents a collection of collected articles, whose topics range from literary criticism and a review of the Egyptian cultural climate to an examination of his country's social and political problems, which had increased significantly before the July Revolution and led him to describe life in Egypt in the book's first article as "sad." His biting sarcasm was evident in his criticism of many situations he disliked, declaring his opinions frankly and objectively, a matter which often got him into trouble with the authorities and provoked readers and critics. However, Taha Hussein—as he declared more than once—did not seek to flatter or deceive his readers; he wrote what would please them. Rather, he was a serious seeker of the truth, declaring it clearly and distinctly, not "inbetween."
