Here, we wonder why Bruller named his novel "The Silence of the Sea"? In fact, it is a symbolic name that expresses the harshest instances of surrender, on the one hand, and the urgent need to react, on the other, to the hatred and love that the novel contains.

The novel was published in 1942, during the German invasion of France, under the pseudonym "Vercor." According to the novel, the occupation of land is an issue that can be resolved in more than one way, but the occupation of lives is nearly impossible, and this is what the two heroes of "The Silence of the Sea" resist.

The novel, if we may be precise, did not come as a collective expression conveyed by a relaxed writer with a reliable talent, as much as it was the writer's own reaction. He began writing two pages of the novel every day while recovering from his injury at the beginning of the war, "to keep his mind active," as he later stated.
