In a moving style and engaging narrative language, Emilia Zola tells the story of injustice and oppression, the story of the oppressed worker and his revolt against injustice, within a historical, social, and political framework that does not neglect the emotional element. This novel has no specific hero; rather, all of its characters can be considered heroes, and the only hero in this novel is the mass of miners and their exploiters. None of Zola's contemporaries addressed this subject, and the author said: "I wanted my novel *Germinal* to be a study of the environment and a social analysis. I wanted it to predict the future and raise the question that will be the most important question of the next century." The author took a neutral stance toward all the social groups he addressed. He did not defend, condemn, or cheer, but rather presented the picture as it was, presenting the events as they happened or as he imagined them, leaving the reader to analyze and scrutinize them and draw their own conclusions.
