The price of immense popularity for any artist is the guarantee that they will be misunderstood. People ostensibly know more about Nineteen Eighty-Four than they actually do. This book attempts to restore some balance by explaining what Orwell's novel is really about, the circumstances of its writing, and how it has changed the world—over the past seventy years—since its author's death. Of course, the meaning of any work of art is not limited to its creator's intentions, but in this case, Orwell's intentions—often distorted and ignored—deserve reconsideration if the book is to be understood as a book, not just as an inexhaustible and useful source of satirical pop references. It is both a work of art and a means of understanding the world. This, then, is the story of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Many biographies of George Orwell have been written, and some academic studies have examined the intellectual context of his book, but no attempt has been made before to integrate the two into a single narrative, while also exploring the book's coming-of-age. I am interested in Orwell's life primarily as a means of shedding light on the experiences and ideas that fueled his personal nightmare, in which he systematically destroyed everything he valued: honesty, integrity, justice, memory, history, transparency, privacy, common sense, reason, England, and love. I will trace Orwell's path through the Blitz, the Home Guard, the BBC, cultural London, and a weary postwar Europe, all the way to the island of Jura where he finally wrote his novel, in order to demolish the myth that Nineteen Eighty-Four was a long wail of despair, issued by a lonely dying man unable to face the future. I want to draw attention to what he was really thinking, and how he came to think this.
