The men of HMS Terror were certain of victory. They were part of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, the first steamship on a quest to find the legendary Northwest Passage, and they were equipped with the latest technology and supplies available at the time. But as they entered their second summer in the Arctic Circle with no melting ice, they were trapped in a nightmarish landscape of unyielding ice and impenetrable darkness.
In endless cold, with supplies dwindling day by day, 126 men fight for survival amidst poisoned food, a shrinking coal reserve, and ships collapsing under the crushing weight of ice. But their true enemy is far more terrifying than all of that.
There is something in that icy darkness... a hidden predator, stalking their ship, a terrifying monster that never stops trying to break into it.
Following the gruesome death of the expedition's leader, Sir John Franklin, Captain Francis Crozier takes command, leading the remnants of his crew in a final, desperate attempt to escape south across the ice. They are accompanied by a silent Inuit woman who, though not speaking a word, may be their lifeline or their harbinger of doom.
As a new winter approaches, and the grip of scurvy and hunger tightens, and the terror lurking in the ice continues to pursue them southward, a terrifying feeling grows within Crozier and his men that there is no escape from their inevitable fate.
