England, 1882. A young nurse flees London for Portsmouth to work in a mental asylum. She is assigned to care for a mysterious and ill-tempered patient named Mr. X, a mental institution resident since childhood. He is an eccentric who loves the dark, plays chess, and never leaves his room. He attempts to solve a series of horrific murders: theatrically organized and escalating crimes targeting beggars. He is joined by his doctor, Arthur Conan Doyle, who is trying to write a detective novel and is searching for inspiration to help him, along with the nurse. Together, the two are drawn into the depths of these crimes, in an atmosphere of humor, intrigue, and the atmosphere of the Victorian theater.
