In 1879, Tolstoy – Russia's great literary figure, one of the world's most famous writers, author of "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina," and fifty-one years old – was at the peak of his glory when he suddenly asked himself: What next after all I have achieved? What is the use of my life? What is its purpose? He felt at the time that he had achieved nothing, and that his life was meaningless.
