How was the Egyptian economy formed before 1952?
And who had its keys?
And how did everything change after that?
This book offers an in-depth analytical study of Egypt’s economic and social history in the first half of the twentieth century, by tracing the role played by the Jewish and Greek communities in the Egyptian economy, before the demographic and economic landscape was radically transformed.
The study examines the types of companies and institutions established by the two communities, the business networks that formed between businessmen and women, and the relationships that Egyptian Jews and Egyptian Greeks forged within the wider society, in a highly complex political and social context.
The book also highlights the major transformations that followed World War II, the rise of the Free Officers Movement, the policies of gradual nationalization, the shrinking of the private sector, and the impact of all of this on minorities and on the economic and legal structure of the Egyptian state.
An important book for anyone interested in the history of modern Egypt, political economy, and the transformations of the state and society.
