About the Translator
Dr. Mohamed Enani (1939-2023), "Dean of Translators," was born in Beheira Governorate. He was an Egyptian translator, writer, playwright, critic, and academic. He earned a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Cairo University, a master's degree from the University of London, and a Ph.D. from Reading University.
He held many positions, including: Head of the English Department at Cairo University, Editor-in-Chief of the Contemporary Literature Series (a series of translated Arabic literary works into English) at the Egyptian General Book Organization, supervisor of the "Second Thousand Books" series at the Egyptian General Book Organization, and an expert at the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo.
He published over 130 works, including books on criticism and language, in both Arabic and English, plays, literary biographies, and poetry in Arabic, and numerous translations from English, most notably his translations of Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, and Lord Byron.
He received numerous awards, the most important of which are: the State Award for Translation for his translation of Milton's "Paradise Lost," the First Class Order of Science and Arts, the Bin Turki Award for Excellence in Translation into English, the State Award for Literature, the Award for Outstanding Performance in Playwriting from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, the State Award for Excellence in Literature, the King Abdullah International Award for Translation, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization Award for Translation into English, the Rifa'a Al-Tahtawi Award for Translation into Arabic, and the Nile Award in Literature.
