The novel revolves around Ali, the son of a poor peasant who works as a gardener in a Pasha's palace. There, he meets the Pasha's daughter, Inji, and a true love affair develops between them. However, the vast class differences stand in the way of their union, and Ali is deprived of his love and feels the bitterness of social injustice. As events escalate, the Free Officers Revolution opens the door to justice and freedom for him and his class, and "Return My Heart" becomes a symbol of the triumph of human dignity over the shackles of class. The novel is not just a love story; it mirrors the social and political transformations in Egypt, and a message of hope for change and justice. It was later adapted into a famous film starring Shukry Sarhan and Mariam Fakhr El-Din, and has become part of the cultural memory of Egyptians.
